How To Make Pillow Covers

Whether you’ve got long-standing arts and crafts skills or not, a fun way to add your own touch to baby’s nursery decor is through some DIY decorating. Making your own pillows can add color and texture into a room while also letting you take control of fabrics. Envelope pillow covers are especially useful because you can instantly change the look of a room with a new cover. Learn how to make a standard envelope pillow cover with our 5 step guide.

1. Wash the fabric: Because unwashed sewn fabric can shrink or rip when you put it in the washer and dryer later on, you should wash the fabric you choose beforehand.

2. Measure the pillow: Take measuring tape and stretch it across the curve of the pillow. Once you have your measurements, add a quarter to a half inch on each measurement to ensure that you have extra fabric. It’s always better to have extra fabric left over than not enough!

3. Cut the fabric: Cut the main panel fabric to match the previous measurement of length. Add a half to one inch to the height and width. Cut another two pieces (small panels) that are roughly your length minus about 6 inches and the same height.

4. Sewing: Place your main panel fabric right side up and place one of the small panels the opposite side up at the edge of the large panel. Once these are placed, pin down each side about 1 ½ inches in.

As for hemming, place the cloth with the right side down on the ironing board. On the outer edge of each small panel (one first, then the other), fold the fabric 1 inch so you can see a small strip of the right side. Start ironing!

Once you finish pressing the fabric neatly on, sew these sides up using a 1/2 inch seam allowance and lay the fabric the right side down and iron the inside seams. Flip the fabric over again and fold over each small panel and iron thoroughly again.

5. Final Touches: Once you pin the top and bottom of the fabric about 1-2 inches from the edge, sew the top and bottom seams with the same 1/2 inch seam allowance at each end of the fabric. Cut each corner diagonally across so that each edge will no longer be a square. Finally, push out the corners and place your pillow inside its new cover!

Their Roof? Your Rules!

For some reason or another, circumstances may give you no choice but to stay at someone’s house. It might be a family member – distant or close- or a close friend. In all cases, there are certain guidelines you should follow to be a decent house guest. Some are instinctive and well-known, but some may slip your mind.

First and foremost, this is not your house and the biggest issue that comes along with an extra person is the extra cost. As much as you can afford, offer to buy groceries especially if you need things or food that your host does not consume. Use water and electricity wisely and go easy on the phone and the internet. It is cheaper and easier for you and your host if you bring as much of your belongings as you can. Bring along your favorite pillow, your own toiletries and NEVER use anything from other people’s things without permission, no matter how minor you think it is.

If you are a student, unemployed or simply “need the money”, you may not be able to help financially. Yet, there’s a lot to do to be a welcome and helpful guest. You need to make sure you don’t load them with any effort. Wash your own dishes and prepare your own food. Do your laundry yourself if possible, make your bed and arrange your room. Offer to help with their housework as well if you can. After all, your hosts will really like it when you become an active member of their household, even if your stay is temporary.

However, it is not always and not only about money or effort. It’s about what you do and how you act. Being polite because you are a guest does not mean being silent and confined to your room/space. Try to make a difference and show your good spirit. Take a part in the general talks going on; say as much as you want about yourself, studies, career and/or other current activities. Tell jokes, watch movies and play games with everyone else. It will make your stay more enjoyable for you and your company and will bring you closer and closer to the people you love.

Remember that what’s more important than adding a spark by your presence is avoiding causing any disturbance. Do not play your music loud, especially if there is someone studying or a baby in the house. Dress appropriately and take care of your general appearance. Give your host and his/her family space so they can talk about matters that don’t concern you without being embarrassed. If you share the bathroom, do not take ages inside, especially in the mornings when everybody else needs it.

Make sure you leave behind a good impression. Give them a “thank you” gift or flowers before you leave. It would be a gesture of gratefulness and will be greatly appreciated.

Allowing Homes To Age In Place With Their People

Think about the one thing that we do every day and have done since the day we arrived on this good Earth? We age of course. Every day we get one day closer to being old. The definition of old changes to us, of course, as we age. In our teens we think twenty year olds are so mature and old. By the time we are in our twenties, we are experiencing our first job; thirties we have the family and by our forties we have resigned that old is still really far off.

The truth of the matter is by the middle of our life we need to start thinking about the last stage and part of that has to do with aging and how to stay independent and living on our own for as long as possible. With this comes a new territory to explore newly termed aging in place. What this refers to is the fact that many people are aging well into their nineties and many people do not want to burden their children will the responsibility of caring for an elderly parent.

As we gain speed slipping fast into out golden years it is important to begin remodeling the space we live in with our future needs in mind. For many of us this means that remodel projects start to include aging in place features that will allow us to continue to move about the home freely and safely. The goal is to make sure that the home that we age in is safe for us, provides minimal maintenance and transcends into more barrier free living space. There is a host of things to consider while aging.

Entering and exiting the home needs to be safe and secure.

Better and brighter lighting is needed in garages and spaces where the vehicles are parked.

Threshold ramps should be installed to provide a zero step entry into the home.

Handrails should be upgraded and be provided on all entrances and exits of the home. Upgrades should consist of heavy duty materials and hardware that will hold up without loosening with extreme use.

Kitchen changes to ease access for preparing meals.

Faucets should be equipped with easy to use levers and an easy to use pull out nozzle. This may come as a surprise but someday in the future it will be more convenient and easier for hair to be washed in the sink.

Shelves that pull out should be incorporated into the kitchen design. This eases back discomfort and back breaking bends.

Refrigerators can be upgraded to allow for shelving to be pulled out.

The knobs on the kitchen cupboards and drawers should be larger and easier to grab onto.

It is so easy for an accident to happen in the bathroom.

Grab bars that are attractive yet fill the aging in place need should be installed in the shower and by the toilet.

Faucets should again be levered, as is true in the kitchen, this helps with stiff joints that don’t turn or grasp as well as they used too.

Showers can be modified to contain a sitting area and shower heads should be changed to removable ones that help get areas that normally are hard to reach for someone with limited mobility.

Toilets can be purchased at a higher height to provide comfort when trying to stand.

Moving in general around the home should be made easier with each renovation.

Make sure doorways can accommodate a walker. This means doors should be a minimum width of thirty six inches.

Add extra lighting throughout the house. Eye site tends to get poorer as we age.

There are many aging in place changes to make as the aging process happens and starts to turn us into people we know longer recognize. Pretty soon we stop thinking about what is old and start thinking about the fact that when we were fifty we were so young and able to do so much. It’s funny how age affects our frame of mind.
